Vineyard Charles Heinz's Vineyard in in the town of Occidental, a cool site in western Sonoma County. This vineyard, which is known primarily for it's exceptional Chardonnay, has the capacity to produce amazing Syrah, right at the cusp of ripeness. The vineyard was originally planted by Charles' grand father in 1912 but was torn up during prohibition. The Syrah vines were planted in 2002. The vineyard lies 900 feet in elevation and sit upon a ridge top with gentle sloping sides.
Soil Gold Ridge Sandy Loam, 24-to-36 inches of topsoil followed by layers of clay.
Viticulture Vineyard is farmed using sustainable and organic methods. All vineyard work is done by hand. Cover crops and composting are used as needed.
Vinification The fruit was fermented whole cluster in a concrete tank for 16 days with very light and gentle foot treading.
Aging Aged in barrel for 10 months before bottling without filtration.
Production 264 cases.
