Cruse Wine Company

Appellation Napa County
Wine Type Red - Still
Vineyard Valdiguié (Napa Gamay) from Terry Wilson’s Rancho Chimiles vineyard in Wooden Valley, Napa Valley AVA. It is a cooler region in south Napa, nestled against the Vacas mountains. Vines are 40+ years old. 70 acres of vineyard are planted at Rancho Chimiles, about 1/3 at 600 feet elevation and 2/3 at 900 to 1,000 feet. Terry and his wife Lyn have been farming the vineyard since 1972. At that time, 10 acres of Napa Gamay were planted on St. George rootstock in a former pear orchard. No tillage in the vineyard with a permanent cover crop on silt loam soils.
Soil Pleasanton loam
Viticulture Chimiles relies on sustainable farming.
Vinification Fruit was destemmed into an open concrete tank. Fermentation occurred spontaneously with manual punchdowns. After 7 days on skins, the wine was lightly pressed and moved to older 500L puncheons. Malolactic occurred naturally with the wine receiving a light sulfur addition immediately before bottling. Like all of Cruse’s wines, it was bottled without fining or filtration.
Production 345 cases.
Notes “The 2017 vintage was picked a bit earlier than previous years to accentuate the vintages natural acidity. The nose is spicy with rose petals and berry fruits with a palate of zippy, cherry pie. Tannins are present but light adding to the impression of brightness.” - Michael Cruse
