Vineyard Perched like a saddle between ridgelines in Pocket Canyon, the site is the beneficiary of cooling morning and afternoon fog, which rolls in reliably from the ocean. Chardonnay planted in 1980 to the Old Wente Clone, followed in 2001 by Pinot Noir plantings of Swan and Calera clones. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, with the Ceritas blocks located on the north facing side, allowing for an extended growing season.
Soil Shale and fractured sandstone
Viticulture Vineyard is farmed using biodynamic principles and no irrigation is used. Old Wente clone.
Vinification Whole cluster crushed and pressed, juice pumped into tank and allowed juice to settle before being barreled down. Racked into neutral barrels. Fermentation happens in barrel in a room of 65-70 to entice natural fermentation and then moved to cellar, around 50 degrees, to allow slow fermentation. 11 month in neutral barrels, Malolactic finishes. Racked into stainless steel, elevage 5-6 months before bottling. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Aging 11 months in neutral barrel. 5-6 months in stainless steel tank.

Bright apple, green pear and floral notes give the 2016 Chardonnay Porter-Bass Vineyard much of its distinctive personality. Beautifully textured on the palate, with terrific persistence and class to burn, the Porter-Bass is also one of the most distinctive Chardonnays in the range. Hints of slate, crushed rocks, mint and a very light, attractive touch of reduction frame the finish.
