Occidental Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017
Bottle Sizes 750ml
Country United States
Appellation Sonoma Coast
Wine Type Red - Still
Varietals Pinot Noir
Farming Dry farmed.
Vineyard Perched on the south-west ridgeline looking directly at the Pacific Ocean puts the vines right in the heart of the coastal weather. High concentration of rocks pushes the vines to their limit. The Calera clones were planted over 30 years ago.
Soil Blue schist and quartz soils with moderate clay content. Well drained due to underlying bedrock.
Viticulture Vineyard is dry farmed and cane pruning is employed to maximize fruit budding potential. Vines yield 1.2 tons/ acre (15 hl/ha).
Vinification Hand harvested and intensely sorted at the winery ensuring only the best fruit goes to tank. The grapes are fermented with 75% whole cluster and 25% de-stemmed for 19 days. Free run and light pressings.
Aging Aged for 16 months in a combination of neutral french oak barrels and 30% new oak.
Notes "Glorious bouquet that is quintessential West Sonoma Coast. Crushed blueberry and incense with violet overtones. Not as powerful as the 2016, but oozes refinement. The palate shows exquisite balance, filigreed tannin and silky texture. Perfect salinity towards the finish allowing the wine to sing long after the last sip. Articulate and magnificent." - John Raytek
