Though the site is categorized by this general geological soil type, there are some variations. It is one of these variations that has led to the making of this vineyard designate wine. Of the 2 acres of Grüner Veltliner on this site, 5 rows see an outcropping of diatomaceous earth. Year after year, these 5 rows have been picked and vinified separately, but ultimately have been blended into Meeresboden. 2015 marks the first year where a portion of this wine was kept in the winery longer and bottled separately. The main reason for this is that this pick shows remarkable texture, a telltale sign of the wines age worthiness. More than any other wine I produce, this wine has been blind tasted by sommeliers and guessed to be Austrian." - Graham Tatomer
Publication Vinous Rating 90

Energy and focus are the two main drivers in Tatomer's 2016 Grüner Veltliner John Sebastiano. Citrus peel, white flowers and a host of saline-infused notes add to an impression of linearity. It will be interesting to see if the 2016 fleshes out a bit more with time in bottle. Today, it is pretty, if a touch austere in feel.
