Gamling & McDuck is the creation of wife and husband team, Gabrielle Shaffer and Adam McClary. After meeting over 10 years ago in Minneapolis, Gabrielle and Adam soon moved to Napa and in 2009 release their first vintage of Gamling & McDuck. Gabrielle is the “official” winemaker, while Adam, in his own words, “does everything else and follows orders in the vineyard and cellar.”
With a passion for the Loire Valley grape varieties Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, Adam explains their desire is simply, “the straightening of the line between the vines, the fruit, and the wine in the bottle.” Gabrielle and Adam try to keep things easy. They harvest their grapes at the balance of optimal ripeness and acitiy, they work with growers who farm sustainably, they only use native yeasts, and they optimize barrel aging in the cellar. Adam tells us, “We have developed our notion of varietal correctness. Our aim is to exemplify and transcend that notion through study and practice. We believe straightening that line means cutting out additions and manipulation towards a stated end goal, but also producing wines stable enough to age and develop in the bottle.
